A very very difficult question to answer. Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately due to the rest of my college class starting to work on their personal statements, and being asked the dreaded question ‘What do you want to do with your life?’ However, I must say this time it’s a lot less pressure to try and come up with an answer, usually an ‘I don’t know’ is greeted with reassurance that it is a totally fine answer.
Now, in terms of following your head or your heart, head is definitely the most realistic, using the most viable career option in terms of money and being able to afford to live. Then you’ve got your heart usually totally following the idea of following your dreams and or your favourite hobby in hopes of turning it into a career.
It’s a difficult argument that you will have, no doubt, with yourself at least once in your life. To follow the path that sees you being able to get by in terms of money (your head), the one that’s realistic and somewhat easier to get into than your big hopes and dreams. The other option is to take a leap of faith. Put your all into your dreams until you make it.
In my opinion the latter is the correct decision. Imagine in 30 or 40 years sitting wondering that if you’d have tried to achieve your dreams maybe you’d have got there. Although the unbeaten path is undoubtedly petrifying, you’ll struggle and it will be hard hard work, at the end of the day you won’t be able to look back and think ‘what if?’. You’ll hopefully be able to say that you’ve somewhat achieved your dream. By trying new things to achieve your dreams you might just find a perfect in between.
The one thing that I don’t want to think is ‘what if’. What if I’d have moved away from home when I first started working? What if I’d have done this? What if I’d have done that?
So, if you’re reading this and you’re in my predicament, work to earn enough to get by but spend every other minute working for your dreams. Put your all into making your dreams a reality. I believe in you, now believe in yourself.
